Robinsons Land Corporation bought a huge property in Malabon City

map of the different cities in Metro ManilaIn the October 18, 2011 issue of the Manila Standard Today, it was reported that Robinsons Land Corporation of taipan John Gokongwei bought 2.85 billion pesos of properties, for land banking, in several places, including one in Malabon City. Land banking is the practice of buying properties for future use or buying land without any current definite plan on what to build on it.

So far, Robinsons Land Corporation (or RLC) is the biggest real estate developer to invest in what could possibly be the biggest property development in my home city. And this makes me wonder… Why?

Malabon City has earned the unenviable reputation of being The Flood Capital of Metro Manila.

It has 21 barangays and most people who do not live in Malabon think that the entire city is flood-prone. That is not true. There are at least four barangays that remain generally or partly flood-free regardless of how heavy the rain is, and that includes the barangay where I live – Tugatog (which means zenith or apex in English) – the highest elevated barangay in Malabon. Artex Compound: an erstwhile happy place

This post is a complete departure from my other posts wherein I featured mostly upscale real estate developments. This is about people who are in desperate straits but remain optimistic of someday owning their houses. Theirs is a community that has become so blighted, but its people choose to stay and at the same time, hope that things will become better someday.

I didn’t originally intend to blog about this place when I took pictures of it during one of my bike rides a few weeks ago. But when you think about it, this post underscores the overarching importance of achieving one of man’s most basic human needs, no matter how insufficiently that need can be filled. (more…)

Importance of mapping the Philippines online

A few days ago, ABS-CBN News announced that a Filipino “citizen cartographer,” Wayne Dell Manuel, bested 700 other contestants to become the winner of the first Google Map Maker Global Competition.

The contest was launched

to help humanitarian organizations like UNICEF better deliver services, respond to crises, and adapt to change in the countries they operate by enabling access to accurate digital maps.

In fact, even before the contest started last December, Wayne’s mapping contributions helped rescue workers locate victims during September’s Typhoon Ondoy.

Above are just a few of the many benefits of online mapping and Google Map Maker is one of them. (more…)
